What a sweet face! Has he figured out he's not getting away with anything any more? It's so exciting when the light goes on in their brains, and they learn the game. "Aha!!"
I think one major rule of thumb for housing a pit is to always remain one step ahead. My sweet but incredibly spoiled pit is always a step ahead of mom. I never underestimate what she may or may not do (its usually may do). But I can't imagine life without her. She is sweet as pie and her personality and sweet demeanor has radically changed the opinions of friends who though all pits were bad. You guys are doing a wonderful job..
@ Anon 6:47 Thank goodness personalities vary so much, so someone who isn't up for one-step-ahead can find a dog that fits their lifestyle. There's a real joy in owning a dog that constantly tests the edges of life's boundaries though .... Some of the best dog handlers we meet learned their skills by 'accidentally' taking on a dog that was a little more than they expected. (and that goes for all breeds - not just pit bulls)
There is a look of defiance there that cracks me up. My girl learned "sit", "stay", "wait", "leave it" very fast and was solid on these but resisted "look at me" for some time. When she finally started doing it, it still looked a little more like a nod from the queen than the adoring gaze I hoped for (and had seen from other dogs).
